Susan has lived in Asheville since 2005. She is drawn to the natural beauty in this area whether it is the mountains, a path in the woods along the French Broad River or the flowers and produce from our local Farmer’s Market. She finds the most exciting part of painting is the challenge of interpreting the visual image with light, color, and shape.

Susan grew up in an artistic family that encouraged following their dreams and artistic pursuits. Both parents were painters and her father Edwin left corporate life in NYC and moved the family of eight to NC in 1964 to follow his lifelong interest in painting. Mother, Mildred followed along the same path and painted until the end of her life. From a very early age Susan expressed her interest in artistic and creative endeavors through painting, drawing, designing, and sewing.

The artistic influence of her parents and the attitude and value of pursuing their dreams have led to the siblings developing creative careers of their own. A story of the Voorhees family art interests was featured Our State Magazine, May 2003.
