Mars Hill ,NC
Upon moving to Mars Hill three years ago, I fell in love with the buildings that speak of the history of this area. My recent series focuses on the edifices that have seen generations pass yet these buildings still stand. Touching the indentations left behind by the tools of skilled craftsmen long dead, I feel a connection and respect for the spirit of these hearty pioneers. It amazes me that these buildings are still standing.
My first love in art was portraiture. From an early age, every visitor to our home was enlisted as my model. While earning my BS in Fine Arts at Western Michigan University, my passions in other subjects evolved, I began to realize the beauty to be found everywhere. But I have come to realize that regardless of my subject matter, still life or landscape, I instinctively approach each as if it is a portrait. I strive to express its unique character, beauty, and complexity through direct observation, color choices and expressive brushstrokes of oil paint.
I have enjoyed teaching classes and workshops in Florida, where I lived for over 40 years. I have also been honored to have been accepted into numerous juried shows, solo exhibits, and received multiple awards throughout my artistic career. My nature is to be always learning and striving. That blank canvas is going to be the best one yet!
