“A Life of Art”

January at Asheville Gallery of Art

Asheville Gallery of Art’s January show, “A Life of Art,” features exciting, harmonious works by three new members, Robin Wethe Altman, Tina Honerkamp, and Deb Sholly. The show runs January 1-31 during gallery hours, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Monday through Saturday and 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. A reception for the artists will be held January 3, 5-8 p.m. at the gallery, 82 Patton Avenue.

When Robin Wethe Altman arrived in Asheville two years ago she was surprised by the artistic inspiration she found in winter. “I'd had a life-long career as a professional artist in California, and my tropical paintings are on calendars marketed in Hawaii. I'd been hungering for a change including cold weather and rain! I’ve been painting cozy candlelit cabins, blue shadows on white snow, and layers of smokey mountains behind inky, black-barked trees.”

Tina Honerkamp interprets the show’s title as capturing the creation surrounding her in her everyday life and putting it on canvas. “The paintings in this show reflect those moments when I’ve been on my daily walks around nearby Lake Junaluska and have seen glimpses of heaven on earth. Most of the time I find it in the small details or in the light and shadows.” Tina is a full-time oil painter with a background in illustration and design.

“My personal life of art has been inspired by these mountains,” says Deb Sholly. “The mountains call to my soul. Their rolling ridges and the mysterious fog that continuously shifts along the hillsides is simply magic to me. I lived close to the Blue Ridge Parkway as a child, and although I have moved in all directions, I have never forgotten the magic of these mountains. Life is circuitous, and I have finally returned home.”
