Lisa Natasha Sousa works in oils interpreting color and form of the natural world. Her current series includes vibrant cactus, succulents, flowers, and landscapes. She builds up layers of saturated color slowly and avoids using solvents and mediums. Her process includes focused attention, building patience, and fostering appreciation for things of importance that you sometimes do not intuit until their absence.

Lisa came to painting from working in community media and film in the San Francisco Bay Area. After a move to the Midwest – possibly as a result of the dark winters – she was overcome with a need to paint and explore color.

After another move in 2009, this time to settle in Western North Carolina, Lisa studied oil painting with artist John Mac Kah, where she learned new ways of seeing and applying paint that she utilizes today. Lisa follows a studio-based practice in West Asheville, North Carolina where she struggles to make peace with the surrounding mountains.
