Frances Greenberg, Elinor Bowman and Lee Entrekin

Show Opening February 3rd

Frances Greenberg studied at The New York Institute of Technology, The New School and New York University. She holds an MFA in painting from George Washington University. She has studied painting with nationally and internationally known artists.

Frances Greenberg is an accomplished artist who has shown in numerous galleries and participated in major art fairs for thirty years. At that time, she was well known for her illustrative watercolors. Ten years ago,

she retired and moved to Asheville where her art took a new direction. She, now, paints in pastels and oils. Her subject matter varies from portraits and figures to landscapes, both plein aire and imagined. She

conducts open studio live portrait and figure sessions for other artists and is a member of the Appalachian Pastel Society and the Portrait Society of America.

Elinor Bowman started painting in 1996, after careers in the business world. She loves to portray people, either in portraits or figures, working so that something of each persona comes through. Several media appeal to her, including brush and ink, oils, water colors, and Conti crayon. Currently she's experimenting with the spontaneity of Chinese brush and ink.

Bowman has won awards in Swannanoa Fine Art League exhibits—2nd place in oil, and honorable mention for an ink portrait. Grace Centre included her works in their qualifying shows.

Lee Entrekin

After retiring from a career with the CDC in Atlanta Lee Entrekin focused on art, taking classes whenever he could, and becoming inspired by the beauty of the mountains in the Asheville area. While admiring the sweeping vistas of the hills and valleys, he became interested in the marvels contained in a single leaf or flower, producing works that reward close viewing, like the natural objects they represent.

Entrekin has studied with several local artists and naturalists to develop skills and knowledge of the local flora. He works primarily in various combinations of watercolor, ink and pencil.

Lee Entrekin

Lee Entrekin is a lifelong student of art. He began drawing as a child, and continued his interest through college, where he studied art at Georgia State University. After a stint in the Navy, however, the reality of finding a job hit home, and Lee began a career in management and information systems that spanned about 35 years.

When he retired from the Centers for Disease Control in 2004, Lee rekindled his interest in art, and began studying with local artists. He also studied the botany of the Appalachians with naturalists in the area. He is inspired by the beauty of our natural environment, particularly as it is reflected in the microcosm of leaves and flowers.

Lee is also a flutemaker, a long-time hobby that he have turned into a cottage industry in retirement. He is a member of the Southern Highland Crafts Guild, and often demonstrates flute making at the shops and occasionally performs at local venues.

Featured Artists of the Month

The Asheville Gallery of Art’s featured artists for January will be new members Peggy Horne Taylor, Patricia Sweet-MacDonald, Carol Branton Morrow and Pat Perkerson. An opening reception for the artists will be held on Friday, January 6 from 5:00 to 7:30 p.m. The public is cordially invited.

The exhibition, “New Year, New Beginnings”, will feature paintings in a variety of media by four of the gallery’s newest artist-members. The show will be on display through Tuesday, January 31, 2012.

Pat Perkerson was born in what is now Zimbabwe and has lived in England, Australia, and the Middle East. She now resides permanently in Asheville. Her work often reflects the people she meets and the cultures and environments she experiences when traveling. Pat works in mixed-media collage, watercolor, and sculpts in a variety of materials.

Peggy Horne Taylor lived in Saudi Arabia for 30 years and many of her works are inspired by the Middle East and her travels. Taylor currently operates her studio and gallery, Willow Wisp Farm Studios, and teaches art classes. She is devoted to painting colorful oil and pastel impressionistic work.

Patricia Sweet-MacDonald was born in Clearwater Beach, Florida. After having two children she moved her fam- ily to New Hampshire. It was here that she studied the traditional oil-painter’s palette and began to capture the ever-changing seasons on canvas. Now being surrounded by the Blue Ridge Mountains, her desire to paint has been fueled even more than ever!

Carol Branton Morrow’s love of drawing and painting started in early childhood. After a 25+ year career in advertising she has had the opportunity to get back to her first love. That first “Wow” moment is what she strives to share in her paintings.

Emerging I

I started painting in 1996, after careers in the business world. Why did I wait so long?

I love to portray persons, either portrait or figures. Something of the persona comes through. Several media are appealing to me, including brush and ink, oils, water colors, and conti crayon. Currently I’m loving the spontaneity of using Chinese brush and ink.

Plein air painting and still life are also subjects I work with. I have won awards in Swannanoa Fine Art League exhibits—2nd place in oil, and honorable mention for an ink portrait. Grace Centre included my works in their qualifying shows.

Painting and drawing are avenues for accessing my higher, true self. I love it!!

Peggy Horne Taylor began painting in 1980. She owned a dessert catering company called “Eatable Art.ʼʼ One day, one of her customers suggested she start painting pictures to hang on the wall for people to enjoy instead of painting pictures on cakes for them to eat. That was all it took for Taylor to jump into oil painting with both feet.

Today she is devoted to painting colorful scintillating oil and pastel impressionistic works in both regular size and miniature. She lived in Saudi Arabia for 30 years and many of her works are inspired by the Middle East and her travels. Formerly the Director of Willow Wisp Farm Studios, a small art school in Fairview, NC; specializing in plein-air painting, Taylor currently operates her studio and gallery with the same name and teaches art classes.

Cold Mountain Blues, pastel with watercolor underpainting

I can’t remember art not being part of my life, so it must have been very early when I started drawing and painting. I do remember my parents sharing with me at every opportunity the importance and love of God through nature. My father particularly was focused on the overall beauty of the world we inhabit. I quickly developed a love for all things natural. This love has continued throughout my life and has lead to the need to record visually the emotions I feel when seeing such beauty. I vividly remember laying in the grass on my back, maybe I was 5 or 6, watching the sunlight move through new spring leaves. The peace and joy I experienced then is what I experience now when I choose a subject to paint.

Transparency, luminosity and the overall beauty of light striking and often moving through objects inspires me to try to capture the feeling of experiencing beauty for the first time. That first “Wow” moment is what I strive to share in my paintings. I begin many of my paintings “en plein air” - which not only is a challenge but a motivating experience. Painting in the “moment” provides me with an overwhelming connection with the beauty of God’s creation.

Frances Greenberg displayed early signs of artistic accomplishment when, at the age of four, she created a mural of nudes in crayon on her bedroom wall. She continued her informal training by practicing drawing on coasters at the bar in her father's New Jersey restaurant. She received her first real recognition by getting caught doing caricatures of her seventh grade teachers.

Included in her academic credits are The New York Institute of Technology, The New School and New York University. She holds an MFA in painting from The George Washington University. She has taken many painting workshops, studying with, among others, Doug Dawson, Margaret Dyer, and Maggie Price.

Greenberg has shown in numerous galleries and participated in major art fairs for thirty years. She is retired from the show circuit and currently, lives in Asheville, NC where she paints in oils and pastels. Her subject matter varies from portraits and figures to landscapes, both plein aire and imagined. She conducts open-studio live portrait and figure sessions for other artists and is a member of the Appalachian Pastel Society and the Portrait Society of America.

Recent works by Cheryl Keefer include oil paintings of landscapes, cityscapes, still life, and watercolor figures. Keefer’s work ranges from small plain air paintings, completed alla prima, to larger gallery sized works which reflect her experience with painting from life. The works have a common thread, each piece was created or inspired by direct life observation and studies done from life, where she has stood with her easel, observing and painting. Keefer’s works are realistic, yet poetic interpretations of the world.

Artist Statement

Painting is like music to my soul. I enjoy creating a visual mood on paper that evokes a memory, a feeling, a moment in time. And like a good musical composition, all the instruments need to work together - my instruments just happen to be paint, brushes and water that give life to a blank sheet of water color paper. I am continually fascinated with the magic that happens when a wet brush loaded with rich color hits wet paper and I get to direct the flow!

One of the greatest pleasures of being an artist is the opportunity to get acquainted with local gardeners and friends who allow me to paint their flowers, gardens and favorite treasures. I like to think that a bit of their personalities mix with the pigments on paper to make each painting a truly unique and original composition. It is also a delight to live in Western North Carolina, surrounded by breath-taking scenery, whether standing on the Blue Ridge Parkway, or pausing next to a woodland waterfall - rich inspiration for my paintings.

Artist Statement

I work in several different mediums; watercolor, collage, clay and mixed-media sculpture. I love to travel to many different parts of the world, but primarily to South-East Asia, where I am constantly inspired by the people I meet, and the natural beauty of the environment. I am fascinated with portraying the human face and body in many different mediums, and feel that my experience in theater is often reflected in my work. I am a passionate gardener, and love to paint flowers, particularly those in the countries I visit.

As well as continuing to paint figurative, portrait,and floral works in traditional transparent watercolor, I have become interested in collage, using my pastel drawings or watercolors as a base for the composition, and incorporating paint, pastel, and hand-made papers from all over the world.

Each piece of art I produce provides me with a learning experience. Each piece takes on a life of their own, teaching me and taking me in directions I'd never consciously thought of before. The journey is exciting, and never ends.

Biography

I was born in what is now Zimbabwe and have lived in England, Australia, and the Middle East, but have spent most of my life in the United States. I now reside in Asheville, NC, but continue to travel as frequently as possible; my work often reflects the people I meet and the environments I see when traveling.

I attended art school (Swinburne Technical College) in Australia, and hold a B.A. in Theater Arts from Cal State Chico. Since University, I have worked in the fields of archaeological illustration,education and curriculum-material writing and illustration. I have attended five watercolor workshops with Canadian/Italian artist Judy Laertini and have taken various ceramics workshops in Greece and the U.S. I recently attended a Kate Worm watercolor workshop.

I have shown and sold my art in Australia, the U.S., Bahrain, and Saudi Arabia.

Artist Statement

Watercolor has the ability to capture the illusion of light like no other medium. Pamela Haddock has been painting full time in watercolor for 21 years. Pam uses her work as a form of storytelling packing her paintings with color and emotional content.

Pamela lives in Sylva, North Carolina on the shoulders of the Plott Balsams Mountains. It is there that she observes and records the weather's moods and chronicles the remains of the old barns and home places that are scattered across the landscape.

Wet on wet is the technique Pam employs to create her work. She begins by wetting the paper front and back and then works quickly to allow the paint to create the effect that only watercolor can.

Pamela is co-chair for the Western Region of the Watercolor society of North Carolina.

She is a member of the Southern Watercolor Society and recently received the Arches/Canson award for her work in the 34th Annual Exhibition.

Julie describes her painting process as a meditative dialogue. Painting becomes an extension of her regular meditation practice where the muse comes through to play with the pigments and textures. Each mark or brushstroke evokes a response that evolves into a finished work. She considers each piece as a magical gateway into the formless world.

"When I pick up a brush and mix some paint, my mind quiets. I slow down and connect to that place inside me that is timeless and not part of this body. Painting is the sanctuary where I retreat from the everyday world and slip into the formless. This is what comes through my hand onto the canvas."

Julie went to college in New Orleans where she lived for 30 years and raised he two sons. She lived in the San Francisca Bay Area for 8 years, and now resides in Asheville, North Carolina. Julie is a member of the National Association of Women in the Arts and The River Arts District in Asheville.

Inspired by the southern genre of her heritage and her old friends, Rembrandt, Sargent and Monet, Cheryl paints on location/from life.

“Painting simply verifies my God-given co-existence with man and nature.”

The daughter of a legacy of Alabama teachers, preachers and farmers, Keefer became mindful of the joy of simple pleasures. Her appreciation for the land and its beauty has been reflcted in her art since the age of 13, leading her to study art formally. She received a degree in Art Education from Jacksonville State University, a Masters in Art History from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and graduate painting from Virginia Commonwealth University. Her work has garnered many awards and she is a teacher of plein air painting in both watercolor and oil.

Keefer is a member of the Western North Carolina Plein Air Painters, and the Portrait Society of America. She is often found painting in the streams, on the parkway, and by the mountain lakes of the region that is her home.

John’s first art education occurred while he was still an elementary school student when he attended Saturday art classes at the Samuel S. Fleisher Art Memorial in Philadelphia. Drawing played a major part in his career as an architect for over 46 years. He typically produced renderings of building projects in pen and ink with color often added with designer markers. In addition to his professional licensing in six states and membership in the American Institute of Architects, John was certified by the National Council of Architectural Boards. John retired from architectural practice to the mountains of western North Carolina in Hendersonville in 2005 and studied watercolor painting with Sue Archer, AWS, NWS, Sterling Edwards, CSPW and James Scott Morrison, AWS. He is a Board member of the Watercolor Society of North Carolina and the Art League of Henderson County as well as a member of the Southern Watercolor Society. John is a member of the Asheville Gallery of Art and is also represented by the Gallery Alta Vista in Valle Crusis, NC.

Impressions of Light

Judy loves the light. She is captivated by how light and dark interplay to form patterns and designs that make even the mundane magical. Although primarily a landscape painter, she paints whatever stirs her emotionally, and by presenting the thing created, may in some measure, reveal the Creator Himself.

Graduating with a bachelor of Fine Arts from Ohio University, Judy continued her association with art by first being an interior designer in Washington D.C. and then teaching art in the California school system. Her paintings got a jump start by attending various workshops in Florida and joining the Gold Coast Watercolor Society, exhibiting in their shows. Her work has been juried into various shows including the Watercolor Society of N.C., Biltmore Floral Show, Hart Theater, and other events of the Blue Ridge Watermedia Society where she has served as an officer. Currently, Judy is represented by the Asheville Gallery of Art and Twigs and Leaves in Waynesville.

Autumn Woods

This watercolor and pen and ink artist has found a home in Western North Carolina depicting the beauty of the forever changing moods of the mountains. Many of her paintings depict the mountains seasonal transitions or from watching the early morning fog lift from the valleys. Sandra is moved to paint by what is happening around her. The remarkable variety of light effects found in nature provides her with a lifetime of inspirational subject matter, pastoral landscape, wildflowers, color intense sunsets, sunlit buildings, the subject matter is unlimited. As an artist she studies her craft through reading, painting and teaching watercolor workshops.

"Watercolor is so exciting to work with, I have learned to let the paint teach me".

Down in the Valley

After graduating from West Virginia University with a degree in art education. She taught in public schools. Through the years she has won awards for her work and participated in juried shows. She teaches watercolor and drawing in the North Carolina Community College system and holds workshops in the Western North Carolina area. Her work can be seen at the Asheville Gallery of Art and Wickwire in Hendersonville.

Reda’s accomplishments as a photographer created her desire to expand her means of expression in the visual arts. She continues to develop her skills in workshops with nationally known artists and dialogues with artists and craft people around the world. Her work, inspired by her continuing worldwide travels, and the emotions evoked are evident in her works of bold and muted color and symbolism capturing the essence of place.   

Reda uses watercolor, acrylic, inks, and oil on paper, canvas, and board to create her art. She builds her paintings layer by layer, believing that layering metaphorically captures the essence of her creative process and a sense of spontaneity that goes beyond surface imagery toward underlying emotional content.

She has exhibited in solo shows and won awards from many Western North Carolina juried exhibitions.   Her artwork can be found in the Asheville Gallery of Art, and in private collections around the USA and internationally.

The "cold wax medium" is a mixture of wax, solvents and varnish combined with oil paint which is applied to a panel surface. As Walton applies the paint layers there is a veiling and unveiling of textures,marks and colors that produce wonderful surface texture and depth. Ruth Ilg, an accomplished artist and photographer, is a native of Germany. She resides and works in Asheville, North Carolina, USA and on Lake Constance, Germany. Biography:
Born in Fort Wayne, Indiana, I received my formal art training at the Fort Wayne Art School, then earned a fine arts degree at St. Francis College (now St. Francis University). After earning a library degree in 1968, at Rosary College (now Dominican University) in River Forest, Illinois, I served appointed Arts Librarian at Illinois State University.

During my Indiana years, I participated in numerous regional and state-wide juried shows, a national exhibition at the Butler (Ohio) Institute of Fine Arts and an invitational show at John Herron Art Museum (Indianapolis), Chicago's McCormick Place. This was followed by and invitation by then Senator Birch Bayh to attend an event honoring Indiana artists at the Old Senate Office Bldg., Washington, DC.

In 1973 I became a board member and exhibitor at Rochester New York's Pyramid Arts Center (later named Rochester contemporary), an organization dedicated to the development and support of contemporary art. At the same time, I continued to show my works in numerous invitational shoes an galleries.

Since 1997, Asheville has been my home where I show my paintings at the Asheville Gallery of Art. My works grace the homes and private collections through out many parts of the United States.

Artist Statement: I work in acrylics, oils and pastels, choosing both objective and non-objective themes. As my work has evolved in both subject and in application, I continue exploring form and pattern, while also probing use of color and color values, currently by means of layering color in thin washes.

Floyd Kemp

Floyd Kemp paints mainly still life subjects using acrylics as his medium. He is a native of Iowa and holds a BA in Art Education from the University of Northern Iowa, an MA in Fine Arts from the State University of Iowa, and has done further graduate work in Fine Arts at Michigan State University.
Floyd taught High School Art in Iowa for 3 years and was a professor in the art department at Jackson Community College in Jackson, Michigan where he taught for 26 years. Since retirement, he has lived in Black Mountain, NC where he has continued to work as a studio artist.
His paintings are interpretations of common, everyday subjects rendered with color and line to lock a moment in time forever.

Non-traditional North Carolina painter Cecil Clemons has lived, studied, traveled and painted in the US, Greece, Panama, Egypt, Guatemala, Hawaii, Germany, Puerto Rico, Italy and Israel. Her interests are archeology, anthropology, history, and art.

She says "painting is the joy of my heart, the work of my soul."

Artist M. Douglas Walton, teacher of many hundreds at Louisiana Tech University, once said, "Cecil is the most right brained person I have ever met". Another teacher of hers, Marilyn Hughey Phillis, calls Cecil "one of a kind, a true original". Cecil's formal art education began at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, DC, the Bishop Museum and the Honolulu Academy of Art in Hawaii. She continues to study and learn, experimenting with paints, colors, lines, faces, masks, shapes, and just "getting it right", to a place where each piece is pleasing and interesting. Boring is not her signature!

Joyce Schlapkohl, a Greensboro native, lived in Lighthouse Pt., Fl. for 34 years before moving with her husband to Waynesville, N. C. She holds a Master’s Degree in Business from U.N.C. and studied art at the Florida Atlantic University and Broward College. Most of her applicable art training came from watercolor and oil painting workshops with nationally known teachers and published artists. Her style emerged over the past 40 years from teachers including Zoltan Zsabo, Gustave Wander, Pat Weaver and John Lines.

Joyce held workshops for years for painters in N. C. and Florida and has taught art locally. The French Impressionist’s paintings remain her favorite style as they capture and recreate the beauty of nature with brilliant light. The Blue Ridge Mountains are a paradise for her subject matter.

Her work is available through Asheville Gallery of Art, shows, exhibits and commissions. She is past President of Blue Ridge Watermedia Society in Waynesville, member of National Museum of Women in the Arts, and is a member of Watercolor Society of North Carolina where she was awarded Signature Membership along with a monetary award from Jerry’s Artarama for the painting, “Window Shopping” in 2007.

The iconography of my work, whether abstract or figurative, is transforming nature into abstract forms. Using landscape as a stepping off point, my work explores the manipulation of perspective, color, and form to create a unique awareness of a specific location. My works are interpretation of environments closest to me physically and spiritually. These paintings are derived from plien air painting experiences, photography and found objects that evoke memory and emotion to an environment. I choose to push organic life to a level of entropy and encourage the viewer to put preconceived ideas of landscape painting aside to become involved with the world on the canvas before them.

Through the layers of paint, forming of marks, scratching, scraping and layering, a depth and history that is unique to each piece becomes evident. The uniqueness is similar to the individuality that is found in nature. An individual's face, flower or sunset all have a sense of spontaneity but evolved over time. As the thoughts and emotions flow it is this buildup of marks and paint that excites me. creating something unknown. While making art, I'm able to encourage this unknown and it pushes me toward the finished work. I become involved in this exploration and immerse myself in the act of painting not representing an object. I have found the to be my purest forms of communication.

Cindy is originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, but for the last 20 years has resided in Asheville with her family, husband Scott and daughters Rebecca and Detchon. Today she sees herself as much at home on a Gulf beach and amidst the Blue Ridge Mountains. Having lived in two such beautiful and diverse environments, she attributes these experiences to her present work. Walton holds a BA in Art from Salem College and a BFA certificate of degree from the University of North Carolina at Asheville.

"The excitement of painting for me is being drawn to a visual image on an emotional level and then interpreting my feelings with light, color and shape. I am fortunate that I grew up in an artistic family. However, the craft of drawing and painting don't come naturally; I am constantly learning to better my skills used to express the sources of my inspiration."

Susan began painting seriously in 1997. She has studied with David Zucarrini while living in Maryland and under other instructors, including Albert Handel, Doug Dawson and John Lines.

Following in the artistic trail of my parents, I launched into a better-late-than-never, lifelong learning process of exploring art through watercolor in 1996. I now pursue these interests full time and carry on this family tradition as a primary focus of my creative life.

Currently, I study watercolor and experiment with mixed media and collage applications which are sometimes unpredictable, but always thrilling. I also teach beginner to advanced watercolor and mixed watermedia classes and will continue to enjoy the process of being a student myself.

Fun Fish Chaos

Growing up in south Arkansas on the banks of the Mississippi River, Kathryn spent many hours exploring the sandbars and levees of the Delta. Those discovered treasures of washed up driftwood, fossils, river rocks and local wildlife are often reflected in her paintings today.

"Attracted emotionally to a subject, I become more interested as I notice patterns and shapes and their relationship to each other. Time is lost when I paint."

Kathryn received her BFA from Louisiana Tech University and continues to seek education to develop her skills.

Olga Michelson

Originally from Russia, Michelson was born and raised in Moscow where she acquired her art education, with primary interest in oil on canvas. While there, she worked as a decorator for the Moscow Drama Theater and as an assistant architect for the Moscow City Restoration Project. After migrating to the US, Michelson was first represented by Park Shore Gallery in Naples, Florida. Upon moving to Asheville, she became a member of the Asheville Gallery of Art. A versatile painter, her subjects include landscape, still life, architectural scenery and ballet.

Spring at Connemara
Watercolor

Al retired in 2000 from a career in engineering, and currently resides in Hendersonville, North Carolina. He began painting in 1989 after formal training at the Baton Rouge Fine Arts Academy. Al has continued his studies in workshops by a number of nationally known artists. He works primarily in watercolor, but enjoys pastel and pen/ink as well. He is fascinated by light and it's resulting values; this effect is captured in many of his works. More recently, Al has focused on creating serene landscapes in misty or foggy settings.

He is a member of the Art League of Henderson County, Watercolor Society of North Carolina, Southern Watercolor Society, Arts Council of Henderson County, Appalachian Pastel Society and a signature member of the Louisiana Watercolor Society.

In a world full of violence, hatred and greed, I feel helpless and lonely. At a time when mother earth needs all of our effort to make the world a better place, I cannot find a better way to express my frustrations and my helplessness other than through my art. This world is a place large enough for people of all races, religions and origins to live together in peace.

Being originally from the most troubled areas in the world, the Middle East, my personal life has been shattered more than once because of wars. I feel like we live in a world of suppression and containment. The strong demolish the week, and we can’t do much about it. Yet I feel passionately that art is one way to help communicate these ideas. I hope that my art will encourage people to speak out against war and violence everywhere.

Her Moon-Juggler Dream

Abstract expressionism dominated the visual arts when I was a student, and abstract expressionism is at the core of my adult work, even though the work itself is figurative. My work is strongly influenced by psychoanalysis, and my paintings are about "object relations"—the relationship of depicted objects to one another and my relationship to depicted objects. I am out to make entities in the world rather representations of entities in the world, and a personal goal is to become an authority on my hidden-even-from-myself self. (How else am I to make the work which is mine to make?) Without losing subtlety or depth, I hope to become ever less concealing and ever more revealing. I aim for “individualized” beauty versus “received” beauty—for "beauty" (wholeness, harmony and radiance) in anti-beauty. A work of art should be an eye-opener.

About the Artist
Howell (Hal) Boyd studied drawing and painting at the University of Nebraska and the University of Mississippi. He earned a baccalaureate degree from Ole Miss, where his teachers included major American sculptor David Smith and painter Jack Tworkov. In the 1980s, he taught marketing for artists in the B.F.A. program of the San Antonio Art Institute, San Antonio, Texas. He is a member and past-president of the Asheville Gallery of Art, Ltd.

Hal's paintings have been exhibited at the Forum Gallery in New York City, the Brooks Museum of Art in Memphis, the Minas Gallery in Baltimore, and at venues in North Carolina, South Carolina, Texas, West Virginia, and elsewhere. Additional work may be viewed at Hal's website, www.halboyd.com.
