Artist Statement

| Cecil Clemons paints as though her vision is hard-wired directly into the swirling universe behind surface reality. In her portraits, the emotions, maybe even the fantasies of her subjects, seem as clear to her perception as a vase on a table.
The sense of communion that one gets from viewing her paintings is partly due to the contour-line style that she often uses. In contour line drawing, more than any other illustrative techniques, the artist concentrates on the subject, and records in flowing line the nuances of form. In Cecil's paintings, the quality of line is masterful, but if that were all, it would be no more than any beginning art student could accomplish. Her genius shows in the whole, not in the parts. She paints with confidence, joy, and obvious affection for her subjects. Her art is to enjoy like the friend who can always make you laugh. |
